“A Day for Rejoicing” consists entirely of Frank’s own compositions, and it is a fine retrospective of his work. It opens with the Advent 2002 Missa Conditor Alme, a festive work with nice use of contrasts and of choral sound. Later in the program we hear the contrasting Mass in F Minor with its almost-Slavic overtones. The earliest work on the program (insofar as dates are given) is a rich setting of “The Righteous Live Forever” from the Book of Wisdom (1983). Teen soprano Abby Miller gives a smooth performance of the solo Litany to the Holy Spirit. Among the other highlights is an adaptation by James Quinn of the so-called Prayer of St. Francis, written for the 50th anniversary of the ordination of our late AAM colleague, Canon Frederic P. Williams. Come, thou fount of every blessing has a nice “early American” feel. The two Advent hymns convey both the sense of welcoming and a sensitive overlay of apprehension in the return of Christ, descending with clouds to reign on earth. We the Lord’s people is an especially compelling hymn setting with an effective solo by alto Diane Haslen. The tone is vital and engaged. – Victor Hill, Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians (September 2005)
