This biographical sketch was current as of the original release date of the recording in 1995. Justin Hartz holds a Bachelor of Music degree (1985) from Westminster Choir College, where his principal teachers were Joan Lippincott and Eugene Roan, and where he received both the William H. Clark and the Molly & Ward Bedford Scholarships. He also holds a Master of Music degree (1987) from the Juilliard School, where his principal teachers were Gerre Hancock (organ) and Albert Fuller (harpsichord) and where he received the Valentine Scholarship. In 1987, he was an E. Power Biggs Fellow of the Organ Historical Society. He is a frequent recitalist in the New England and the mid-Atlantic regions. His recent tours have included appearances at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, New York City, the Friends of the Kotzschmar Organ (City Hall of Portland, Maine), and Irvine Auditorium of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. While he considers American Romantic literature his specialty, his interests span the gamut from early music played on period instruments to the contemporary organ and piano.
