“Sing to the Lord New Songs” is devoted to the work of contemporary American composers with 10 of the 22 pieces being by Frank Boles. These include the festive title track, which alternates verses from Psalm 98 with well-known verse from The Temple by George Herbert. Novelty is provided by two of Frank’s arrangements of Nigerian folk melodies, one for brass ensemble and one of choir. Joel Martinson is represented by three excellent settings of otherwise-familiar texts: a portion of the Veni Emmanuel, the Isaiah vision ‘Twas in the year that King Uzziah died, and for Christmas, There is no rose. The influence of the eastern Church is evident in three intriguing works of Frank Ferko. Another George Herbert settings and an attractive Come, thou long-expected Jesus are by Richard Delong. Bob Chilcott’s setting of John 3:16 and two anthems of David Burg (including yet another texts from The Temple) would be useful additions to a choral library. Perhaps the highlight of the whole program is Dan Locklair’s jazzy Magnificat from the Montreal Service. – Victor Hill, Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians (September 2005)
