… live performances recorded on tour in 2001 in Scotland and England. It opens with Gerald Near’s superlative setting of some verses from the seventh-century Latin hymn Angularis Fundamentum (some of these verses are found at number 518 in The Hymnal 1982). The customary Evening Canticles are heard in versions by Henry Purcell (the familiar G minor) and, intriguingly, Roland E. Martin. Particularly welcome are anthems of Barry Rose (Morning glory, starlit sky), Lee Hobby (Hear us, O hear us Lord), Anthony Piccolo (The Key), and Frank Boles (God is our refuge). Six Psalms set to various Anglican chants are notable for the intelligent rendering of the texts (one actually recognizes stressed and unstressed syllables!) The familiar Britten Te Deum in C completes the fine program. It’s especially gratifying to see works of American composers on tours by American choirs since the British choir – greatly as I admire their work – seem to use almost exclusively music by British and Continental composers.
