Nordic Journey – Volume XII – Organ Music from Norway
(Double Compact Disc)
James D. Hicks
James D. Hicks continues his quest to discover hidden organ music treasures from Nordic composers, and to inspire new organ music from leading Nordic composers of the current age, in the twelfth volume – a double-CD – in his NORDIC JOURNEY series. The featured organ is the 1884 August Nielsen organ as rebuilt and enlarged by Kuhn in 2009, in the Uranienborg Kirke in Oslo, Norway. A significant portion of the program is devoted to works for pipe organ and other instruments. James D. Hicks is joined by an ensemble of 4 violins in Kjell Mørk Karlsen’s Suite for Organ and 4 Folkviolins. Organist Hicks is joined by a Brass Quartet from the Oslo Philharmonic in a fesitval piece by Fridthjov Anderssen. He is also is joined by the 3-member percussion ensemble “SISU” in Kjell Mørk Karlsen’s “Triptycon for Organ and 3 Percussion,” and James renders a delightful performance, with Caroline Eidsten Dahl on recorder, of Rolf Karlsen’s Partita on “Herre Gud, ditt dyre navn og aere.”
