James D. Hicks continues his quest to discover hidden organ music treasures, as he commissions new organ music works from composers who live in the Nordic nations. His 19th volume of the Nordic Journey series features the historic 1871 Åkerman organ in the rear gallery of the Cathedral in Uppsala, Sweden. In Volume XIX, Dr. Hicks makes the premiere recording of a work he commissioned from Fredrik Sixten, entitled “A Nordic Organ Book.” The work consists of 24 contemporary miniatures for pipe organ, with one miniature for each of the 12 major keys and each of the 12 minor keys. “A Nordic Organ Book” takes its structural model from the 24 Preludes of Frederic Chopin, and the 24 Preludes and Fugues of J. S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Klavier, which contain similar groups of 24 pieces using all of the major and minor keys. Rounding out the program are two constrasting works by Wikander and Lönngren.
