Hicks explores music inspired by Nordic folk melodies.  This disc contains premiere recordings of several works by 20th-century Swedish composers, as well as new composers who are active today, including Fredrik Sixten and Mårten Jansson.  Performed upon the neo-classic inspired 1964 Andersen organ.

In this fourth CD in the Nordic Journey series, American organist James D. Hicks records a program of contemporary organ music from 20th and 21st century composers from the Nordic nations.  The organ is the 1898 Åkerman and Lund organ, restored in 1898 by Harrison and Harrison, and most recently in 2009 by Åkerman and Lund, in the Cathedral of Våsteräs, Sweden.

Hicks continues his quest to discover hidden organ music treasures from Nordic composers, and to inspire new organ music from leading Nordic composers of the current age, in his fifth volume - a double CD - in his NORDIC JOURNEY series.  The venue for Volume 5 is Kalmar Cathedral.  Kalmar is a city located on Sweden's southeast coast.  The organ originally dates back to 1883, and in this most recent 2013 restoration by Tostareds, the gamut of organ literature from the Romantic period to the present day is conveyed with clarity and majesty.

Hicks continues his quest to discover hidden organ music treasures from Nordic composers, and to inspire new organ music from leading Nordic composers of the current age, in his sixth volume - a double CD - in his NORDIC JOURNEY series.  There are TWO venues represented in Volume VI:  Turku Cathedral with its 1980 Virtanen Organ, and St. Michael's Church in Turku, with its 2002 Grönlunds Organ.  Turku is found on Finland's southwestern coast.  Disc 1 holds a virtuosic concert program and Disc 2 contains many shorter and lighthearted works.  Two pieces in the program, by Mauri Viitala and by Santeri Siimes, are newly commissioned works by James D. Hicks.

F. Steinmeyer organ (restored by Kuhn), the 1740 Joachim Wagner organ, and the 2015 Torkildsen organ.    Both discs contain newly commissioned works by James D. Hicks, the largest of which is the Symphonia Aurora Borealis by Fredrik Sixten.

The program has a balance of newly-commissioned organ compositions with Nordic organ classics.  The recording features guest artists Mats Bertilsson (organ) and Helena Ek (voice).

Hicks continues his quest to discover hidden organ music treasures from Nordic composers, and to inspire new organ music from leading Nordic composers of the current age, in the tenth volume - a double-CD - in his NORDIC JOURNEY series.  Disc 1 features the 1879 Olsen / 1986 Marcussen pipe organ of Helligåndskirken, Copenhagen, Denmark.  Disc 1 features 19th through mid 20th century organ compositions.  Disc 2 features the 1994 Andersen organ of St. Morten's Church, Randers, Denmark.  Disc 2 features organ literature from post-World War II, mid 20th-century through the current time.  The recording features a cameo appearance on Disc 1 by guest organist George Chittenden.

Hicks continues his quest to discover hidden organ music treasures from Nordic composers, and to inspire new organ music from leading Nordic composers of the current age, in the twelfth volume - a double-CD - in his NORDIC JOURNEY series.  The featured organ is the 1884 August Nielsen organ as rebuilt and enlarged by Kuhn in 2009, in the Uranienborg Kirke in Oslo, Norway.  A significant portion of the program is devoted to works for pipe organ and other instruments.  James D. Hicks is joined by an ensemble of 4 violins in Kjell Mørk Karlsen's Suite for Organ and 4 Folkviolins.  Organist Hicks is joined by a Brass Quartet from the Oslo Philharmonic in a fesitval piece by Fridthjov Anderssen.  He is also is joined by the 3-member percussion ensemble "SISU" in Kjell Mørk Karlsen's "Triptycon for Organ and 3 Percussion," and James renders a delightful performance, with Caroline Eidsten Dahl on recorder, of Rolf Karlsen's Partita on "Herre Gud, ditt dyre navn og aere."
